Acne: How I Got Rid of a Recurring Breakout
Back in october/november I suddenly got a huge and VERY PAINFUL breakout on my neck and part of my chin. Of course it wasn’t the end of the world and I know there are cases way worse than mine, by no means do I want to sound disrespectful to people who suffer from severe acne since I have several cases in my family and I know how tough it is. The thing is, it had never happened before and I was really lost, so I look up online which could be the cause of it. Apparently, depending on which area of your face you get spots the cause is different. From what I read, my spots could be due to stress or hormonal problems. I have a hormonal disorder but I take medication so in case something had changed I had a test done and all the levels were ok so I guess the reason for the break out was stress. Maybe I should have gone to the dermatologist but I didn’t…The final proof for me (even though I am not a specialist) was the week of my comprehensive exams to earn my MA. That week my neck was full of huge spots so I think that was the cause of the breakout.
At the beginning I had no idea what to do so I tried different products and I want to let you know which ones worked for me and which ones didn’t. Obviously, every person is different and I would like to say that you should talk to a doctor first and not make the same mistake as me, but right now my skin is under control (you can see the photos of the process below, now I have to fight the scars they left behind!), so here is my review of these products.
I started with these three first products from Mario Badescu. The Buffering Lotion is supposed to bring to the surface all those painful, under the skin spots and it is a night treatment. The Drying Cream does the same but you can apply this during the day even under your make-up, but I have to say I only used this while I was at home in the evening. The Drying Lotion is one of those solutions to dry the spots once they come out. These three products worked more or less ok but even though they improved my skin a little bit, they were not powerful enough and my spots came back in the end. It was weird because at the beginning I saw a huge improvement but after a few days new or the same spots were back. These ups and downs continued so I decided to try something different.
La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo is very famous, it is a treatment for acne-prone skin and I think it is targeted at severe cases, so I never put this all over my face, only on my neck. I saw and improvement, I had less spots although the big ones remained there. I think this product worked better that the previous ones because even though I still had problems, the area was definitely clearer.
I wasn’t happy enough so after reading a review of the Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil where it said it helped clearing breakouts I didn’t think twice and purchased it and I am so glad I did! It is definitely the product that cleared my skin completely. I didn’t have many expectations since I had already tried 4 different products and no big improvement happened but I have to say, the morning after the first night I applied this I was shocked. My pimples hadn’t disappeared completely but they were way less inflamed. After using it for a few months the breakout in my neck is completely gone but now I have to start the quest for a product that gets rid of the scars…help me!
If I had to recommend only one product it would definitely be the Clarins oil. I still use the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion for standard pimples to dry them and I sometimes use La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo in the morning if I see a lot of spots in my chin (that is basically the only place where I get spots but you know, it is what it is, I already know that once a month they will come and visit me and I can live with those for sure). Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil is not the cheapest product but it is worth every cent. I have been using 4-5 drops almost every night for the last 4 months and I am still half way through the bottle more or less, so a little goes a long way and I have seen results with it so I am happy I bought it and I would definitely repurchase this again.
However, please bear in mind that every case is different and what worked for me might not work for you. My advice would be to see a doctor first if you are experiencing something severe.
You can find the Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil here (US), here (UK) and here (Spain). If your skin concern is different, Clarins has two other versions of this oil, one for normal/dry skin and another one for dehydrated one, which, if they are as good as the Lotus one it is a safe bet!
Finally here are the photos of the process, I only photographed half of my neck, no need for more since the other side was in the same state. It might not look very bad but believe me, it was bad at the beginning. As you can see in the last two photos the only thing I have are scars but the old breakout is nowhere to be seen! Hurrah!
